Why Hydraulic Cylinder Seal Sets Fail and How to Make Them Last

When a trolley stops holding its load, or oil starts to appear on the rod, the seal set usually gets the blame. It is often the seal that failed, but the seal is rarely the cause. Knowing the difference saves you from replacing the same set twice in one season.

What a seal set contains

Most sets hold four kinds of seal, and each has a separate job. The piston seal holds pressure across the bore so the cylinder can lift. The rod seal keeps oil inside. The wiper keeps dirt outside. The O-rings seal the static joints. Because the jobs differ, a failure in each one shows up differently.

Cause one: contamination

This is the most common cause by a wide margin. Grit that gets in through an uncapped coupling or a torn wiper is dragged across the seal on every stroke and wears it away. Fit a new set without finding where the dirt came from, and the failure will repeat.

Cause two: a scored rod or bore

A seal can only seal against a smooth surface. Once the rod has a score line, no seal will hold against it for long. Inspect the rod before fitting new seals, not after the new set starts to weep.

Cause three: pressure beyond the rating

Tipping circuits spike at the end of the stroke. Repeated over-pressure squeezes seal material into the clearance gap, and the seal never fully recovers its shape.

Cause four: age and storage

Rubber compounds harden over time, especially in heat. A set that has sat in a hot storeroom for years is not the same set that left the factory.

How to make a set last

  • Cap every coupling when it is not connected

  • Replace the wiper whenever you replace the rod seal

  • Inspect and dress the rod before fitting new seals

  • Use the correct bore size set, not the nearest one available

  • Store spare sets away from direct heat

Most of these failures begin at an open coupling. Our dust caps and dust adapters keep grit out of the circuit, so the seals you fit last as long as they should.
